Controlling the Narrative

african american autobiography as self-preservation

and resistance

Poet, artist  professor and equality activist and founder of #WritingRevolution - Denise Miller, and the Society for History and Racial Equity (SHARE), have received a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council to partner in a project called "Controlling the Narrative."  The purpose of this project is to take control of the African American stories of our region that have so often been either ignored or told in the voices of others and to rewrite them in our own voices. In this project we will attempt to recover, preserve, and present oral testimonies and family and community storiesthrough a series of conversations with young people, members of the general community, and descendants of early African American families.
